Toyota has developed a 3 litre 6 cylinder hybrid engine that will go into their cars by the end of 2001. The new technology called THS-M (Toyota Hybrid System-Mild) uses a starter generator unit to enable stop start at the lights, it recovers energy with regenerative braking. The unit is external from the engine and will be driven using an electromagnetic clutch linked to the engine.
